Barry Lehane, our Head of Case Management and Rehabilitation, alongside his brother John Paul, a remarkable 42-year-old double transplant recipient, and his wife Edel, recently completed the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle!
Their efforts in facing the challenging 170km “Ring of Kerry “ not only raised over £5,000 and counting but also brought vital attention to the importance of kidney and organ donation in Ireland.
John Paul’s health journey is a testament to the power of selflessness and familial love. His kidney function declined due to the long-term effects of diabetes, which he has battled since childhood. In 2018, his brother Barry made a life-changing decision to donate a kidney to John Paul, being a perfect match. Subsequently, John Paul went on to receive a pancreas transplant in 2020, significantly improving his quality of life.
For Barry, the act of donating his kidney was an unconditional gift of life to his ailing brother, emphasising the profound bond and love between siblings. On the other hand, Edel, John Paul’s wife, found hope during uncertainty, believing in a brighter future for both her husband’s health and their son Oran.
The trio’s participation in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle was not just a physical challenge but a powerful statement of gratitude and advocacy for kidney donation.
With a huge thank you to Anthony Penketh, whose immense support ( and vehicle driving ) was instrumental in ensuring the safety and well-being of Barry and John Paul throughout their challenging journey.
Reflecting on the experience, Barry expressed, “Participating in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle was not only an incredible physical and emotional journey but truly lifechanging. The overwhelming support and generosity we received in raising awareness for kidney donation fills us with immense pride. Above all, I am incredibly proud of my brother John Paul.”
The Lehane family’s inspiring story serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, reminding us of the transformative impact of organ donation. As they continue to raise awareness and support for the Irish Kidney Association, their journey stands as a testament to the power of love, family, and the enduring spirit of generosity.
